Tommy Thompson is Free! But Where is the Gold?!

BREAKING NEWS for all you treasure hunters and coin nerds out there!

The man, the myth, the legend: and the most stubborn prisoner in federal history: is finally walking free! Tommy Thompson, the genius engineer who found the "Ship of Gold," has been released from prison after a decade behind bars!

If you’ve been following the world of numismatics for the last 40 years, you know this name. If you’re new to the hobby, buckle up! This is a story of deep-sea robots, millions in gold, a high-stakes manhunt, and a legal battle that would make a Hollywood screenwriter dizzy!

The Legend of the S.S. Central America

First, let’s talk about why we care. The S.S. Central America was the ultimate prize! In 1857, this massive steamship was hauling 30,000 pounds of gold from the California Gold Rush. We’re talking thousands of freshly minted Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint!

Then, disaster struck. A hurricane hit off the coast of South Carolina. The ship went down. 425 people lost their lives. And all that gold? It sat at the bottom of the Atlantic, 8,000 feet deep, for over a century!

It was the "Holy Grail" of shipwrecks!

Tommy Thompson: The Man Who Found It

Enter Tommy Thompson. He wasn't just some guy with a metal detector. He was an engineer who built a revolutionary deep-sea robot named "Nemo." In 1988, he did the impossible! He found the wreck!

The images from back then were mind-blowing. Piles of gold bars! Thousands of gold coins sitting on the ocean floor like they were waiting for someone to pick them up! For us coin collectors, this was the ultimate dream. Imagine seeing a literal carpet of MS-65 Double Eagles just lying in the sand!

The Trouble Starts: Where’s the Cash?

Tommy brought up tons of treasure. In 2000, a huge batch of it was sold for about $50 million. But here’s the kicker: the people who funded his expedition? They claimed they never saw a dime!

The investors sued. The crew sued. Everyone wanted their piece of the Ship of Gold! Tommy argued that most of the money went to legal fees and bank loans. The courts weren't buying it.

In 2012, Tommy was ordered to appear in court. Did he show up? NOPE! He went on the run!

The Greatest Manhunt in Numismatic History!

Tommy Thompson and his girlfriend disappeared for two years! They lived in a Florida hotel under fake names. They paid for everything in cash. They were reading books like "How to Be Invisible."

The U.S. Marshals finally caught up with them in 2015. When they raided the hotel room, they found stacks of cash: but they didn't find the missing gold!

The $2.5 Million Mystery: The 500 Missing Coins

This is where it gets crazy for us coin collectors. There are roughly 500 gold coins: most of them gorgeous Double Eagles: that are completely unaccounted for! These aren't just any coins. These are shipwreck gold coins with incredible historical pedigree. Their value is estimated at over $2.5 million!

The judge asked Tommy: "Where are the coins?"
Tommy said: "I don't know."
The judge said: "I don't believe you."

Because he refused to answer, Tommy was held in civil contempt. He sat in a jail cell for nearly TEN YEARS! He was fined $1,000 EVERY SINGLE DAY he refused to talk!

Can you imagine? He’s accumulated millions of dollars in fines just to keep the location of those coins a secret!

The Belize Trust

Tommy claims the coins were moved to a "Belize trust." He says he doesn't have the power to get them back. The government thinks he’s lying. But after a decade, the judge finally decided that keeping him in jail wasn't going to make him talk.

If ten years in a cell won't break you, nothing will! So, Tommy is free. But the mystery remains…

Why This Matters to You!

Think about it! There are 500 high-grade gold coins out there somewhere. Are they in a safe in Belize? Are they buried in a backyard in Florida? Are they sitting in a safety deposit box under a fake name?

As long as those coins are missing, they are the ultimate "ghost coins" of the numismatic world. If they ever hit the market, every collector in the world is going to want one! We’re talking about pieces of history that have been at the center of a decade-long legal war!

What’s Next for Tommy?

Tommy is older now. He’s spent a huge chunk of his life fighting the system. Is he going to go find the gold? Will the government keep watching him? You can bet your bottom dollar (or your favorite Morgan) that the U.S. Marshals are going to be keeping a very close eye on his movements!

This story has everything: shipwreck adventure, engineering genius, betrayal, a fugitive run, and a decade of prison silence! It is the most insane story in the history of American treasure hunting!

What do you think? Did Tommy forget where the gold is? Or is he the ultimate "HODLer" who waited out the government for ten years just to keep his treasure?

We’re talking all about this on the show!
